Best cupcakes in London continued…….Hummingbird American Bakery
Ok, so I didn’t quite realise just how many avid cupcake fans there are in the world - 2009 is clearly the year of the cupcake revolution! As I am of course loyal to the readers of londonerseye.com, I decided to check out some suggestions for myself.
So….on a grim saturday afternoon (yes London, where has the sunshine gone?) I set off to west London on another cupcake bakery hunt to brighten up the day.
So not strictly british but very firmly London based, Hummingbird bakery very much lived up to expectations. American in background (but in fairness, the homeland of all cupcakes), Hummingbird was set up in 2004 with it’s first store opening in South Kensington. I popped along to another branch on Portobello Road, in amongst the jostling tourists and queue that went out of the door. Truly a classic bakery with a clear pink theme, the cupcakes lining the windows were mouth watering enough! Although very busy, it was a short wait, the staff were really friendly and I managed to order a ‘rocky road’ and ‘red velvet’ within 5 minutes. My red velvet cupcake was pretty much to die for. With just the right amount of soft buttery cream cheese icing and melt in the mouth red sponge with a hint of chocolate, this definitely rates high on my cupcake list.
Luke ordered a rocky road, which was non cupcakey but full of chocolatey marshmallow goodness. Personally, I was more pleased with my cupcake choice and will definitely be going back for more in the future. The packaging was small but perfectly formed, although I still don’t feel it beats Peyton and Byrne’s candy coloured boxes!
Overall, a fantastic bakery which obviously has a large crowd of followers. Thumbs up!
Watch out for the next update as the cupcake trail continues….. I will be reviewing cupcake stands (including Crumbs and Dollies) at some point in the very very near future!
