Why people ride single speed bikes in London

Image taken by Lauren Manning on Flickr

Single speed bikes are by nature a much simpler beast than their mountain bike and hybrid bike counterparts.
There is simply less to go wrong on a single speed bike and single speeds will hold up to frequent abuse and usage better than more complex bicycles.
From a practical viewpoint the only maintenance that is required for looking after a single speed bike is a sporadic cleaning to get rid of grime and dirt build up and some chain maintenance. However you may want to check …

The End of the World Halloween Party

Halloween is upon us again and everyone seems to have gone crazy for it this year with shops full of gruesome costumes and decorations!
Unfortunately though there is some bad news, the world is ending on the 30th of October 2010, zombies are set to kill us all.
This is obviously quite sad but there’s nothing we can do so there’s no point getting all miserable about it.
The good news is that while the rest of the world freaks out and cries and stuff, you can gather together all the …

Studio lighting for portraits class at Photography Course London

Recently I attended a studio lighting for portraits class at Photography Course London which was held in a studio in deepest Hackney Wick and run by Cleveland Aaron who is a highly regarded photographer who has worked in the music, fashion and portraiture industry.
I was a little apprehensive about the class at first, but quickly felt put at ease by Cleveland and his apprentice as they make all the class members feel welcome and relaxed through informal chit chat before the class begins. Cleveland is an excellent teacher (better than …

Secret Cinema - Lawrence of Arabia

So the day had finally come..I was decked out, as instructed, in Bedoiun attire (um..a red bedsheet that I got tangled up in and almost tripped up on more than once..) and was eagerly anticipating what was awaiting me at Alexandra Palace station.
Following a trail of similarly dressed tribespeople we were greeted by actors keen to barter with us. Having been told to plan for this, a friend had the genius idea of bringing partypoppers; we began marketing these as the best thing since sliced..falafel. To be honest …

A West-End Musical in the Woods

Musical theatre gives me the shivers and I have no interest in watching Andrew Lloyd Webber find his Nancy. That being said, the only thing cold and perverse about the production of ‘Into the Woods’ at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park was the mid-August wind and fine drizzle that briefly threatened to interrupt the performance. That the show went on – and that I wanted it to continue – is testament to the successful retelling of the Broadway hit, which is based on the book by James Lapine …
