Galleries in London - The Design Museum

Looking to get cultural? As a slight obsessive in the field of art, architecture and design, my aim over the next few months is to build a comprehensive guide of the best galleries to be found north, south, east and west of the capital. So forget the usual London landmarks and get appealing to the creative in you.

I will be adding to this section bit by bit the more I tend to wander around exhibitions with my head phones on! So, keep updated by joining our twitter updates and if you have any comments or suggestions, feel free to email me at info@londonerseye.com.

The Design Museum is a brilliant addition to the predominantly contemporary art gallery scene in London. Focusing on the main aspects of design be that architecture, furniture, industrial or fashion, the Design Museum is refreshing change. Designed by Conran and Partners, the white rectilinear modernist building sticks out along the river front, and is easily reachable from Tower Bridge. This is also a walk with great views - my suggestion would be to get off at Tower Hill tube and walk along the bridge (donít forget a camera). Just remember to take a sharp left down some steep stairs and on to Shad Thames as this is easily missed.

The layout of the museum is easy to navigate, and the great shop and cafe make it easy to spend a good day wandering around the exhibitions. I particularly love the diversity of the exhibitions on show here, and recently very much enjoyed the dark political statement that fashion designer Hussein Chalayanís show suggested. The Design Museum also has strong links with the architectural world and hosts some fantastic exhibitions of internationally renowned architects and designers. The Design Museum uniquely celebrates the natural ability of designers to be able to combine many design fields into their own interests. Keep a look out for the architect David Adjayeís photography exhibition, to be held next year. The area of design, as a both a functional and aesthetic tool, is brilliantly shown off here.
