Lazy Oaf Interview

24 June 2009 No Comment Read other posts by ruth

What’s not to like about this little gem? The London based Lazy Oaf is every adult child’s fantasy - born from a love of illustration, graphics and cartoons with a bit of east london thrown in the mix. I hounded press lady Jerry for some Londonerseye stylee ‘question time’……….

Hello Lazy Oaf - why the name?
Hiiiiii. The name represents the lo-fi, uncomplicated style of drawing featured in our designs. We also think there’s nothing better than partaking in a good bit of tea drinking, biscuit eating and sitting in front of the television.

Is your heart firmly rooted in the east end?
Yes we do like East, we have had a studio here since 2005 and are relocating to a shiny new office near Old Street next week so it looks like we’re staying put for a wee while.

Your graphics are great, where do you get some of your inspiration from?
Old annuals, food packaging, trips to Tokyo and TV programmes our designer Gemma watched when she was younger. She particularly loves the Garbage Pale Kids.

Who designs your stores……and are there any plans for more in the future?
At the moment we have one shop in Kingly Court in Carnaby Street which was designed by Gemma with a lot of input from the shop staff too. Our current window display is full of loads of handmade paper faces wearing various glasses created by our friend Rosy Nicholas.

It would be great to have more shops in the future in other parts of London, we’d also love to have a shop in Paris.

We’re liking your Bumper bags, who gets to choose what goes in them?
There are a couple of us in the studio who are responsible for picking the array of goodies to go in the bumper bags so we just go with what we are feeling on the day. But we always make sure they are as exciting as possible.

It’s not often you see a talking radio/a happy poo. Do you ever give them nicknames?
Everything in the Oaf land has a nickname, come and spend a day in our studio and you will get lost in a world of obscure names that can take some getting used to!

What’s the advantage of wearing really BIG and BRIGHT accessories?
They’ll give any outfit that instant wow factor that will send eyes popping and mouths gasping the moment you leave the house.

What song/band best describes the Lazy Oaf brand?
Uh Oh We’re in Trouble by Shampoo

Thanks Jerry! The Lazy Oaf store can be found on Carnaby Street for your viewing pleasure………
